On March 24th, 1997, I visited the town of Hopewell, Virginia and the
section of town known as City Point, which is located on a bluff
overlooking the junction of the Appomattox and James Rivers
approximately 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia.
City Point was originally a separate town from Hopewell and was
settled by Sir Thomas Dale. In 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant
selected City Point as the headquarters for his armies.
During the Civil War the town was used by the Union and Confederate
armies as a prisoner of war exchange point.
Family records indicated that one of the McClenny family members
was returned to the Confederate Army from the Union Army at City
Point and I went there to find out the details.
No records of prisoner exchanges are maintained on site so my visit was futile.
